Edwards began racing cars in the Skip Barber Series in 2003 - becoming the youngest open wheel driver in history and taking his first win at Daytona at 12 years and 238 days of age.In 2005, he went to Europe to race in Italian Karting.

After an accelerated promotion to the world of European motor racing at age 14, he became the youngest to ever hold an FIA racing license in Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup and Formula Renault 2.0 Germany. 

In 2007 Edwards returned to the US and drove in Formula Atlantic for Forsythe Racing. Highlights of the season included a second place finish at Toronto. In 2008 he stepped back on the US ladder, winning four races in Star Mazda on his way to clinching the title. He returned to Atlantics in 2009 with Newman Wachs Racing and won the title with four wins.

In 2010, Edwards began his sports car career in the Rolex Series with Speed Source and won at Lime Rock. He also had two Nürburgring VLN Class wins for Schubert Motorsports. In 2011 he drove for Stevenson Motorsports in the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge, winning twice. 2012 was even more successful in both the CTSCC (one win, third in the points) and Rolex Series (three wins, four poles, six podiums and runner-up in the points).

For 2013, his speed caught the eye of BMW who secured his services to substitute for ALMS GT regular Joey Hand when he was on DTM duty. Edwards showed he was more than just a stand-in – taking pole and winning at Lime Rock. Edwards continued to race for Stevenson Motorsports, where in the Rolex Series he captured four wins on his way to third in points as well as taking two wins in the CTSCC and a runner up position in the championship. 

In 2014, Edwards was promoted to a full time factory driver for BMW in the new Tudor United Sportscar Championship, scoring three podium finishes. He also competed for Fall Line Motorsports in the CTSCC, winning twice and finishing runner up in the championship. 

In 2015, Edwards competed for BMW Team RLL in the TUDOR Series scoring three podium finishes including victory at Laguna Seca. He also competed in the VLN and the Nurburging 24, for BMW Motorsports.  

His role as a BMW factory driver continued in 2016. He raced in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for BMW Team RLL, competed at the Nurburgring and his efforts were rewarded at the end of the season with an opportunity to test a BMW DTM machine at Jerez.

For 2017 his role as a factory driver for BMW enters its fifth consecutive year,  contesting the IMSA Series again and returning to the Nurburgring.
